Catching the boat to school..?

Think about your commute to school every day.  Do you live close enough to walk?  Do you get a lift in with a parent or friend?  Maybe you need to take public transport as you live a little bit further away?

Regardless of method, you are relatively safe when you travel to school.  Discounting the miniscule probability of being involved in an unfortunate accident, your life is never really put at risk as you make your way to the school gate.

Spare a thought then for the children of Zamboanga City, a poor region of Mindanao in the south of the Philippines.  Some children have to wade/swim up to a kilometre to attend school each day.

Enter an organisation called ‘The Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation’…

Questions to consider…

  1. Why is fishing put ahead of transporting children to school on these islands?
  2. Is the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation a top-down or bottom-up form of development?
  3. How could this simple approach have long lasting socio-economic impacts on the island communities of the Philippines?
